North Hennepin Community College

The building is a welcoming environment for the large general education program. It creates a focal point on the campus for the College of Liberal Arts program and complements the existing architecture.

Kodet worked closely with the faculty before the design was initiated.

This resulted in a number of important elements, including:

• All offices were to have windows and natural light.
• Small meeting areas where dialogue could take place on a spontaneous and casual basis were incorporated.
• Faculty support areas were designed to be central and convenient, minimizing distance and allowing faculty easy access.
• Conference spaces were integrated with the departments so faculty could meet as a group and also conduct large student/faculty meetings and workshops.

Ed Kodet, FAIA, LEED AP gave a presentation at the 2004 North Central Regional Conference for the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) on how sustainable design strategies were implemented in the Center for Liberal Arts at NHCC.
