North Hennepin Community College

Brooklyn Park, MN

Kodet was involved in the programing and design of NHCC’s Liberal Arts Building. The existing science facility was remodeled and an addition was designed to house the math, social science, and English departments. The design takes into account the existing building and incorporates up-to-date instructional and office spaces, as well as significant improvements for indoor air quality.

The building is a welcoming environment for the large general education program. It creates a focal point on the campus for the College of Liberal Arts program and complements the existing architecture.

Kodet worked closely with the faculty before the design was initiated.

This resulted in a number of important elements, including:

  • All offices were to have windows and natural light.
  • Small meeting areas where dialogue could take place on a spontaneous and casual basis were incorporated.
  • Faculty support areas were designed to be central and convenient, minimizing distance and allowing faculty easy access.
  • Conference spaces were integrated with the departments so faculty could meet as a group and also conduct large student/faculty meetings and workshops.
